Which type of roofing is right for me?

Traditional Tile Roofing

When it comes to choosing your type of roofing for your home some can be better than others, more so here in Southwest Florida. We're going to discuss briefly what the benefits of each are below and which is best.

Traditionally, many homes in Southwest Florida have either shingles or tile. Lets start with asphalt shingles.

Shingles are the inexpensive types of the roofs in the group, partly due to just being do to their versatility, ease of installation, and they work in most climates. They normally require low maintenance. In terms of being inexpensive, really depends not he thickness, style, and type of shingle, but relatively a lower cost than your tile or metal roof. Shingles also come in a variety of colors. The downside to shingles is that here in SWFL, they may undergo a higher probability of coming off during a hurricane, this doesn't add the cost long term, comparing it to a tile or metal roof.

Tile roofing is the next on our list, between Tile and Shingles, these are the most common in Southwest Florida. There are many advantages of Tile roofing between shingles and metal roofing. Depending on material you can expect anywhere between 25 up to 100 years depending on quality of material the Tile is made of. This material is heavier in weight, so may require roof reinforcement if you're replacing a traditional shingle roof. They can withstand heavy climates, especially here in SWFL. They do have a higher present cost, but in the long run they do last a lot longer than a shingle roof and can withstand pretty heavy winds depending on the material. Tiles also come in a variety of styles and colors.

Now on to our last one; Metal Roofing. Metal roofing is not as common in SWFL, you may mostly see it in commercial buildings. A lot of the times, depending on where you live, metal roofing is not allowed on existing or new homes, for the fact some Home Owners Associations, want to keep the look of the community. Metal roofing does have a higher start up cost from Tile or Shingle, but there are many advantages to metal roofing. Metal roofing can be more environmentally friendly, higher energy efficient, higher durability as they can withstand stronger winds and extreme weather conditions. These advantages also work for you as theres less maintenance with a metal roof. If installed correctly, these types of roofs can outlast Tile or Shingles by decades.

There are many advantages with all the types of roofs, some lasting longer than others. If you want the best of both worlds, we suggest Tile roofing, where it's not as expensive as metal roofing and last longer than traditional shingles.
